Guidelines to Select Vendor to Outsource PCB Assembly Service

You can effectively reduce production costs for a PCB assembly when you choose to hire a qualified company that can manufacture it for you. Outsourcing your PCB assembly project can eliminate the need to purchase expensive equipment. It also frees up a lot of time and working capital that can be used on improving other aspects of your business. Many vendors can offer the production and assembly of printed circuit boards for your project. If you want to make sure that you  hire the right service provider, check out these guidelines:

  • There are many highly qualified electronic manufacturing service (EMS) companies that you will find by using online search tools. The trick is to find a firm that matches your requirements.  So you should start out by defining the approximate sales range of EMS company that you want to work with.  For instance, smaller firms of less than $10 million in sales are unlikely to have more than one surface mount line so equipment failures can become an issue. Then define other critical characteristics that your EMS provider must have such as ISO registration, MRP system, AOI Inspection (Automated Optical Inspection) and test capability.
  • Once you have a potential list of suppliers the next step is a plant visit.  This is when you meet directly with people that will be managing your account.  During the plant tour make note of the general cleanliness and organization, it should be spotless and have everything in its proper place.  There should be a minimal amount of WIP which helps demonstrate a planning and loading system that works and is an indicator that your assemblies will be on time.
  •  The next step in the selection process is a quotation.  When asking for quotes use a range of annual quantities and define how the contract will be administered in terms of actual release and ship quantities.  Be sure to define how you want the product to be tested.
  • Lastly, choose a high-quality manufacturing service that has more than 20 years of experience in electronics prototyping and PCB assembly manufacturing. This ensures that you are getting the highest quality of customer service and PCB assemblies that meet specification.
